Seminar: “Misinformation in the New Digital Age”

How do we distinguish truth from falsehood in a world full of “smart” algorithms and fake news?

The University of Athens is organizing the seminar titled “Misinformation in the New Digital Age” as part of the European FAMA project. The aim of the seminar is to promote digital literacy, foster critical thinking, and analyze the contemporary challenges facing public discourse and democracy.

Today, the spread of false and misleading information is one of the greatest threats to modern democracies. The rapid development of new technologies allows fake news to spread faster and more precisely than ever before. In a highly digitized environment, societies are becoming increasingly vulnerable to manipulation, as the news is undermined daily by hybrid practices, malicious online activities, and massive distortions of the truth.

The seminar focuses on issues such as the transformation of news in the digital age, the mechanisms of misinformation and propaganda, the role of Artificial Intelligence, the possibilities for resistance and critically evaluating news by citizens, as well as the consequences for public discourse and democracy.

Who is it for:
• Members of the public who wish to develop critical thinking skills regarding the news.
• Students and researchers in the humanities and social sciences.
• Journalists and media professionals.

It will be held on two alternative dates:
📅 Wednesday, June 3, 2026 | ⏰ 4:30 PM – 8:30 PM 📍 Amphitheater 16, Humanities Building (3 Sina Street)
📅 Monday, June 8, 2026 (alternate date) | ⏰ 4:30 PM – 8:30 PM 📍 “Argyriadis” Amphitheater, Main Propylaea Building.
